INR RAS presents its Neutron Complex possibilities Workshop on scientific studies at the Neutron Complex of the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences took place in Moscow on March 12. About 60 representatives of research groups from the Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI RAS, Gatchina), the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR, Dubna), the Russian Research Center - Kurchatov Institute (RRC KI, Moscow), the State Scientific Centers of RF - Institute for Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE, Obninsk) and Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow), the Institute for High Pressure Physics (HPPI RAS, Troitsk) participated in discussion of a nuclear physics investigation program. Such researches may rely upon the experimental possibilities of INR RAS that are available for the present state of the high current Linac of hydrogen ions in Troitsk. The most promising mutual experiments and related topics were presented in 15 talks.
The Neutron Complex of INR RAS includes an Impulse Neutron Source (IN-0.6) with neutron guides and installations for condensed matter investigations, a 100-tonn Lead Neutron Slowing-Down Spectrometer (LNS-100) and a radiation damage facility RADEX at the beam-stop of the experimental area. This beam-stop is now under modification to provide researches at a time-of- flight neutron spectrometer (TOFNS). TOFNS is expected to suggest additional possibilities for neutron-nucleus studies by the beginning of 2005.
Nuclear-physics experiments may be carried out at such complementary installations of INR RAS as LNS-100 and TOFNS. LNS-100 started its operation in 2000. In 2003 the joint experimental investigations of IPPE and INR began. First measurements of neutron fluxes at a working model of TOFNS were taken in 2003. The Workshop revealed a great interest of nuclear physicists from the leading Russian centers for deep cooperation in experiments at the INR Neutron Complex.
The Neutron Complex of INR RAS and its substructure may also be regarded as a suitable place for international experiments on accelerator driven systems (ADS) and nuclear transmutation problems studies. The corresponding discussions, which include specialists of RRC "Kurchatov Institute" (Moscow), Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering (Moscow), Pole Universitaire Leonard de Vinci La Defense (Paris), Institute for Nuclear Research (Moscow) and other centers, are now underway. ADS facility developed in Troitsk around the Linac in the Neutron Complex of INR, including target and 5 MW subcritical core, for nuclear transmutation of minor actinides and long-lived fission products was proposed.
